Swimsuit is a type of dress, which is worn for various water engaging activities.Sportsmen wear swimsuits so that they can feel lightweight, while they are involved in some water sports, like swimming, diving.

Now- a- days, other than sports, women also use swimsuits to reveal their body. Swimsuits are available for both men and women.

Swimsuits are readily available in the market. Some people feel very comfortable in wearing them, while some feel really embarrassing to go out with these swimsuits. So here are lists of types of swimsuits, among which you can choose, to meet your necessities.

Swimsuits Common For Men and Women

1.    Rash Guard

Rash guards are worn by mainly surfers to protect them from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun, and also from hot water of the sea. A rash guard is usually made of nylon or polyester and spandex. This makes it expandable, and thus, makes it easy for divers to perform their activity. Rash guards originated in Australia. These are available both in full and half sleeves. A rash guard protects the diver’s legs and chest from sticking to the wax on the surfing board. It also gives a little protection from star fish stings.

Rash guards can also be used for other sports like surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and wind surfing. So, not only divers, but people related to wind sports can also try these suits.

2.    Wetsuits

Wetsuit is a type of swimsuit, which is worn mainly by divers and for other recreational water sports. There are many other types of swimsuits available in the market, but a wetsuit has various features like buoyancy, protection from abrasions and insulation, which makes it unique and most popular among other swimsuits.

A wetsuit is made of neoprene and is a little permeable to water. It allows a little water to enter into the suit. This water absorbs the body temperature and becomes hot after a little while. This provides insulation and comfort to the diver. A wet suit is available in two styles-

a)    Full Suit Or Steamer

This provides protection to the entire body. These are full sleeved, and also cover the legs.

b)    Shorty Or Spring Suit

This suit only covers the torso area. These are half sleeved, and do not cover the legs.

3.    Dry Suit

A dry suit is similar to a wet suit. It is also made of neoprene. But the only difference between a dry suit and a wet suit is that, unlike a wet suit a dry suit does not allow any water to accumulate inside the suit. This provides better insulation for diving in cold water.

Another distinctive feature of the dry suit is that, it comes with an inflation valve. This valve helps the diver in adjusting the buoyancy of the suit, according to the diver’s needs. As the diver goes deep, the diver injects gas into the suit, thereby increasing its buoyancy and does the opposite, if he has to return to the top.

4.    Board Shorts

Board shorts were originally made for surfing and other water sports.

But now-a-days, these have gained more importance as a regular wear in many countries. These are made of nylon, and have a rigid waist band rather than elastic. This ensures protection against a pull off of the shorts during surfing.

Women’s Swimsuits

These swimsuits are exclusively made for women. These are used both for water sports and for revealing body. These are of various types, like-

1.    Maillot Or One-Piece

A one-piece is a type of swimsuit that is used by women for swimming and other water sports, and also for sun bathing. One-piece is a continuous swimsuit, which covers the torso area of women.

Women, who feel uncomfortable in wearing a two-piece swimsuit, use a one-piece swimsuit. These are skin tight and stretchable and are available in a variety of variants and colour options.

Women, who are on the heavy side, can opt for a colourful one-piece beach wear or swimsuit, as it makes them look sexier, by enhancing their curves and it also provides a strong support to the bust area.

2.    Bikini Or Two-Piece

Bikini is a typical modern swimsuit or beach wear for women. They are extremely popular with young girls and women. They are very sexy and glamorous.

A bikini covers the breasts and also covers the buttocks and crotch. The upper and lower parts are similar to women’s undergarments (bras and panties). A bikini can cover a wide area or they can be extremely revealing.

There are a wide variety of bikinis available today, to meet one’s needs. The various types of bikinis tops are halter tops, bandeau tops, tank tops etc. Types of bikini bases are thongs, g-strings, hipsters, French cut, brief cut, etc.

3.    Monokini

The monokini is actually like a bikini. It has the bikini bottom, but without any tops. This reveals the breast, and is really very shocking and weird to wear it in open areas.

Now-a-days, the monokini has been evolved to a new style. Just like a one-piece, it also connects the two separate upper and lower parts by a thin strand of cloth. It is no more a topless swimsuit.

4.    Tankini

A tankini is a two piece swimsuit. But it is more modest than the bikini. Tankini consists of a tank top and classic bikini base. This covers the breast as well as the belly and the buttock.

A tankini provides more support to the bust area and is hence more desirable among people who are heavy, but don’t want to miss the advantages of a two-piece.

5.    Burqini

This is a classic swimsuit for ladies who don’t want to reveal their body while taking swimming. This swimsuit was essentially made for Muslim women.

A burqini covers the entire body, but is enough light-weighted to enable swimming.

Men’s Swimsuits

Trunks look like board shorts, but are less baggy and shorter than them. These are made of nylon, and cover the mid portion of the body.
